This talk looks at the ways that people approach problems when they decide that it's time to improve database performance. The three main strategies I'll be looking at are - Add Hardware, Change a buffer or cache setting, or add an index. To some degree, each strategy works, but which one is the best, and when? (Hint: come to the talk to find out).
I will be using examples with real life data sets - and the audience will be encouraged to join in and answer questions as to 'why things work this way'. Attendees that have war stories to share will always welcome!
My name is Morgan Tocker. I work for MySQL AB as a Support Engineer.
In my spare time, I like to contribute to Open Source software, ride my road bike, and throw things at unsuspecting victims.
In a former life, I worked as a PHP/MySQL developer part-time while studying IT/Journalism at the University of Queensland. I've not finished -- It's just on hold for a little while.
