"How Did Other Organizations Incorporate the Principles of Open Source, Data and Standards into an Existing IT Structure?" Workshop with City of Vancouver

Municipalities sometimes get hung up on looking for other municipalities with 'best practices' but I'm sure there are other levels of government, universities and private organizations of various sizes who have also fully transitioned to an open source model or who are operating some kind of hybrid. Here at the City, we're interested in learning from any organization. The specific areas we're interested in learning about (to help us fast track our process) include:

* Quick wins
* How to approach the mass of organizational data to chunk it up into the shareable, non-shareable and something in between
* Where to start / how to priortize the data to be shared
* Areas which proved insurmountable for reasons of privacy, copyright, etc.
* What applications would you like to build using City data? The answers to this question will help us to understand the potential uses of City data as well as the relative priority of various types of data.
* Surprises (good and bad)
*Lessons learned
* How long it took
* How much it cost
* What type of data would be most useful to the community; ie. if we're trying to chunk the data elephant one bite at a time, it sounds like GIS-type data might be more useful than say, financial journal entries.

This list isn't exhaustive but it would be a great starting point.
